Murphy Bed Mechanisms

What Is a Murphy Bed Mechanism?

A Murphy bed mechanism is the supporting system that moves the bed horizontally or vertically and brings it to a closed position against the wall. Also searched for as a wall-folding bed mechanism, folding bed mechanism or bed cabinet mechanism, these systems help one room serve more than one purpose.

When the bed is closed, the floor area is freed up; the room can be used as a work, living or play area. When needed, the mechanism is opened to create a sleeping area for standard-size mattresses. For this reason, Murphy bed systems are preferred in small homes, teen rooms, guest rooms, home offices, serviced apartments and accommodation projects.

The Modamob collection offers options for different needs, from mechanisms with a wooden carcass to systems with a full metal frame, as well as models with a desk, a sofa and a remote control.

How to Choose the Right Murphy Bed Mechanism

Before choosing, you need to consider not only the bed size but also how the room and the furniture will be used. To find the right model, these questions should be answered:

• Will the bed be a single or a double?
• What are the width and height of the wall where the furniture will be placed?
• How much clear floor distance is available for the bed to open?
• Should the system open horizontally or vertically?
• Do you need a desk or sofa function while the bed is closed?
• Will the furniture body be made in a workshop?
• Do you prefer manual use or a remote-controlled system?

The opening direction of doors and the positions of windows, sockets, radiators and skirting boards should also be included in the measurements. Before buying a mechanism, it is important to compare the technical drawing of the chosen product with your project dimensions.

Single Murphy Bed Mechanisms

Single models are suitable for children's and teen rooms, student flats, small guest rooms and individual work areas. In the Modamob collection, depending on the model, there are options compatible with 90×190 and 100×200 mattress sizes.

Single Murphy bed mechanisms can be chosen with a horizontal or vertical opening direction. If you also want a work desk in the same piece of furniture, the models with a desk can be considered.

Horizontally opening single systems can be an advantage especially where the wall width is sufficient but the room depth is limited. Vertical models, on the other hand, use less wall width.

Double Murphy Bed Mechanisms

Double Murphy bed mechanisms can be used in projects where the bedroom and a living room or work area must be in the same room.

Depending on the model, the collection includes systems compatible with 120×200, 140×190, 150×200 and 160×200 mattresses. As the mattress size increases, the wall area the furniture covers, its depth when open and the choice of mechanism also change.

Double options include horizontally and vertically opening models as well as systems with a desk, a sofa and a remote control. Because not every mechanism supports all mattress sizes, the size options on the product page should be checked separately.

Vertical or Horizontal?

The vertical Murphy bed mechanism moves the bed from the headboard end. The closed furniture takes up less wall width, but when the bed is open it extends further into the room. It can be a good choice for narrow but deep rooms.

The horizontal Murphy bed mechanism lets the bed open along its long side. It needs more width on the wall, but it can extend a shorter distance into the room. It can be a suitable solution for attic spaces, rooms with sloped ceilings and narrow teen rooms.

When deciding, you should calculate not only the size of the closed furniture but also the walkway space the bed will take up when open.

Metal Carcass or Wooden Carcass?

Murphy bed mechanisms for wooden cabinets are developed for carpenters and furniture makers who will produce the wooden carcass of the furniture in their own workshop. In these products, the case wood is not included in the price. The cutting and connection dimensions suited to the selected mechanism must be used.

In models with a metal carcass, the metal frame that carries the bed is built into the system. This gives you a more ready-made base for the bed frame. There are metal-frame options for single, double, horizontal, vertical and bunk bed installations.

Since the package contents of each product may differ, you should check the relevant product description to see whether the slatted base, slats, legs, gas springs and connection parts are included.

Desk, Sofa and Remote-Controlled Systems

Murphy bed mechanisms with a desk are suitable for users who want a bed and a work area on the same wall. The desk can be used while the bed is closed, so there is no need to set aside extra space for a separate work desk.

Mechanisms with a sofa work as seating by day and as a bed at night. According to Modamob's category information, in some models with a sofa the sofa does not need to be pulled out of its place to open the bed.

Remote-controlled Murphy bed mechanisms work with the help of a linear actuator. Instead of lifting the bed manually, the opening and closing movement is carried out with a remote control. When choosing a motorised system, the electrical connection, the placement of the mechanism and the installation requirements of the product should be planned in advance.

For projects where two beds will be used in the same space, you can look at the Murphy bunk bed mechanisms.

Mechanism or Ready-Made Murphy Bed?

A significant share of the products listed in this category are not ready-made furniture but mechanism systems used in furniture production. A customer who buys a mechanism may need to build the wooden cabinet body separately or have a furniture maker build it.

Users who do not want to deal with furniture production and assembly may be better off looking at the ready-made Murphy bed models. Carpenters and workshops who will build their own design can choose a system that suits their project dimensions from the mechanism category.

This distinction must be checked before ordering:

• Is the product only the movement mechanism?
• Is the metal bed frame included in the package?
• Are the wooden cabinet and doors included?
• Are the mattress and beech slats in the package?
• Are the assembly and wall-fixing parts shipped with it?

Production and Material Features

According to the technical information on Modamob's category page, 5 mm laser-cut steel sheet is used in the mechanism parts. In the load-bearing sections of models with a slatted base there is a 30×40×1.5 mm box profile, and the metal surfaces are coated with oven-baked paint.

The mechanisms are produced at the Modamob facility in Bursa. Selling directly from the manufacturer can help carpenters, furniture workshops and project installers get technical information about the product more easily. Because technical specifications may vary from model to model, the relevant product page should be taken as the reference before ordering. Category information.

Murphy Bed Mechanism Prices

Murphy bed mechanism prices vary according to the following features:

• Single or double bed size
• Horizontal or vertical opening direction
• Wooden carcass or metal frame construction
• Desk, sofa or bunk bed system
• Manual or motorised use
• Leg and supporting frame options
• Standard or custom-size production
• Parts included in the product package

When comparing two products, you should not look only at the sale price. You should check whether the metal frame, slatted base, slats, gas springs, legs and connection parts are included in the price. Current prices and selectable sizes are shown on the product cards.

Mattress Fit, Warranty and Installation

The category information recommends using a standard mattress up to 18 cm for Murphy bed systems. However, the weight and size of the mattress must suit the technical specifications of the selected mechanism.

According to Modamob's delivery and assembly page, the mechanisms are covered by a 10-year warranty and the gas springs by a 3-year warranty. Products are shipped unassembled, and the documents needed for assembly are included in the package.

Because a Murphy bed is a load-bearing system, the furniture must be fixed to a suitable wall with the right fasteners. Users without assembly experience are advised to get professional help.
